What Size Barbering Scissors Should I Use?

What Size Barbering Scissors Should I Use?

Choosing a pair of barbering scissors isn't just about finding a pair that looks good or has the biggest price tag. One of the most important decisions you'll make is actually one of the simplest: what size scissors should you use?

With barbering scissors commonly ranging from around 5.5" through to 7" and beyond, knowing where to start can be confusing – especially if you're new to barbering.

The truth is, there isn't one perfect size for every barber. It depends on your cutting style, technique, hand size and the type of work you do.

Here's what you need to know.

What does the size of barbering scissors mean?

When you see scissors described as 5.5", 6", 6.5" or 7", the measurement generally refers to the overall length of the scissors from the tip of the blade to the end of the finger ring.

Even half an inch can make a noticeable difference to how a pair of scissors feels and performs.

5.5" scissors

Smaller scissors offer excellent control and precision.

They're particularly useful for detailed work and can be a comfortable starting point for barbers with smaller hands. However, the shorter blade means you'll cover less hair with each cutting motion.

Good for: precision cutting, detail work and shorter cutting movements.

6" scissors

For many barbers, 6" is a great all-round size.

They're long enough to handle a wide range of barbering techniques while remaining comfortable and controllable.

If you're buying your first quality pair and aren't sure where to start, 6" scissors are well worth considering.

Good for: everyday cutting, general barbering and barbers wanting a versatile scissor.

6.5" scissors

Moving up to 6.5" gives you additional blade length without making the scissors feel excessively large.

They're particularly useful if you regularly use scissor-over-comb techniques because the longer blade allows you to cover more area efficiently.

Good for: scissor over comb, larger sections and general professional barbering.

7" scissors

Long scissors have become extremely popular in modern barbering.

That additional blade length can make scissor-over-comb work faster and smoother, particularly when removing weight or working through larger sections.

They won't suit everybody, though. If you've only ever worked with smaller scissors, a 7" pair can initially feel very different.

Good for: scissor over comb, larger sections, removing bulk and barbers who prefer a longer blade.

Does hand size matter?

Yes – but perhaps not as much as you might think.

A barber with large hands may naturally find longer scissors more comfortable, while somebody with smaller hands may prefer the control of a shorter pair.

However, technique and personal preference are just as important.

Plenty of barbers with smaller hands use 7" scissors, while others with larger hands prefer 6".

The key is finding something that feels balanced and controlled in your hand.

What size scissors are best for scissor over comb?

If scissor over comb forms a big part of your work, we'd generally suggest looking towards 6.5" or 7" barbering scissors.

The longer blade lets you cut a greater area with each movement, which can make the technique more efficient and help create a smoother result.

This is one reason you'll see longer scissors in so many professional barber kits.

What size scissors should a beginner barber use?

If you're starting your barbering journey and don't yet know what you prefer, 6" or 6.5" is a sensible place to start.

Both sizes offer plenty of versatility without being overly specialised.

As your technique develops, you'll start discovering what feels right for you. You may eventually have several pairs of different sizes for different jobs.

And that's completely normal.

Do I need more than one pair?

Eventually, you probably will.

Many professional barbers build a collection that might include:

  • A versatile everyday cutting scissor

  • A longer scissor for scissor-over-comb work

  • Thinning or blending scissors

  • Texturising scissors

But if you're a student or just starting out, don't feel you need to buy everything immediately.

One good, versatile pair that you can control confidently is far more useful than five pairs you don't understand how to use.

So, what size should I choose?

As a simple starting guide:

5.5" – precision and detailed work
6" – excellent all-rounder
6.5" – versatile with more length for barbering techniques
7" – excellent for scissor over comb and larger sections

There isn't a "correct" answer.

Your scissors are one of the most personal tools in your barbering kit. What works perfectly for another barber might not feel right for you.

Think about the techniques you use most, the size of your hands and how much control you want from the blade.

Most importantly, choose professional scissors that feel comfortable enough to use day after day, client after client.

Be Barber Tip:
Look after your scissors. Keep them clean, check the tension regularly, store them safely and have them professionally sharpened when required. A quality pair of barbering scissors can serve you for years when they're properly maintained.
